Brief introduction to Ian Currie and Creative mentoring
My name is Ian Currie and I started Creative Engagement. My perception is that it is not unusual for artists, some of whom have become successful and well-known to lose touch with their original inspiration and spark of creativity. This becomes a real problem for working artists, which is not always solved by peer-communication or by just keeping going. I saw a need for creative mentoring for those people and also for newer artists, whose experience of art schools was that there was little or no attention paid to creativity as a topic in it’s own right. Over the years I have mentored people from different creative disciplines and saw that my forty years experience as a creative person and mentor often helped them regain an essential thread of creativity.
Creative mentoring
One-to-one creative mentoring consciously explores how the primary principles, qualities and skills of creativity come into an individuals artistic expression. This exploration brings into clear focus what is needed in the individuals creative life and work and how to achieve it. I help individuals enter into a personal understanding and experience of creativity which is meaningful for them and enhances their art.
Short term mentoring
Part of my one-to-one mentoring work is to help artists to move quickly through non-productive or ‘dry’ periods. It can also specifically help with making transitions from one approach or project to another or when they have particular resistance to carrying on with a project.
Long term mentoring
It is my intention to help individual artists in the long term by helping them prevent the pitfalls to creativity and to consciously develop the richness and depth of their creative resources. Part of this is done by talking about the underlying principles and dynamics of creativity and partly through specific exercises. My work with artists addresses the spiritual, psychological and practical aspects of creative experience and expression. It is non-religious and relevant to all artists.
Business development mentoring
Part of my work is to help artists and craft workers consciously bring their creativity into developing their business while maintaining their values and creative sensibilities.
Clients
I have a client base of established professional artists and creative people, as well as artists still learning their way.
